Levels and Measurable Student Growth
One of the hardest challenges for educators especially, Fine Arts educators, is showing a student's growth over time. In Artventure student growth is an integrated part of the system, and is measured in two main ways: First with immediate data-driven formative assessments through the monitoring of student growth in multiple areas (different artistic mediums) via levels, and second through continual summative assessment through an online portfolio which would track a student's growth over a long period of time, and also serve as an online journal (blog) and a way for students to reflect on their work throughout the process. In both of these ways students receive immediate and ongoing feedback from the game system.
Leveling Up to Create a Zone of Proximal Development
Creating a Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD); the area between a child’s level of independent performance (what he/she can do alone) and the child’s level of assisted performance (what he/she can do with support). Or the ideal zone for student learning is a daunting task for any educator, primarily because it is so hard to define for many students. But by using the gaming elements like levels Artventure is able to solve this problem by quantifying it.
By allowing student to "Level Up" and assigning a minimum level to the Jobs that they can take on, with the Job Request Board, Artventure is able to create an ideal ZPD for every child based on their own history of jobs that they have chosen. Scaffolding them slowly but surely towards mastery, and their ultimate potential. |
Tracking Long Term Growth with an Online Portfolio
Within Artventure, as student completes jobs from the Job Request Board they will automatically upload their finished pieces to a digital portfolio. This will ultimately create a database of all of a student's work that they have done while using Artventure and allow an Arts Teacher to easily view all of their work and asses if a student has not, has met, or exceeds expected growth for a set amount of time.
